Transition to nasal breathing and habit correction

The Myosa® for TMJBDS® S2 Mouldable (S2M) is used overnight only in patients who are using the S2 appliance but are struggling to retain it overnight. It is made with dual-layered technology which provides a soft outer layer and hard inner core to prevent appliance distortion during moulding. Eventually, the goal is to transition the patient to using the non-mouldable appliances so they can close their mouth overnight naturally.

The Myosa® for TMJBDS® S2 is used in the second stage of treatment when the patient’s Breath Hold Time (BHT) has reached 35 seconds or more. The S2 is the main appliance in the TMJBDS® range and works by advancing the lower jaw and opening the bite, which has the effect of opening the airway. It also has numerous other features which help it to treat intracapsular TMJ disorders while improving breathing and myofunctional disorders. For better retention during sleep, the patient can use the mouldable version of the S2 appliance (S2M). Progress to the S3 when the patient’s BHT reaches 45 seconds or more.

S2 Design Features

The design features of the S2 open the airway and improve TMJ symptoms, especially intracapsular disorders, in patients with mild to moderate BDS.

  • Soft Thermoplastic material
  • Tongue tag and elevator
  • Small breathing holes
  • Air Spring Core

Directions for Use

The Myosa® appliance is to be used for one to two hours each day, plus overnight while sleeping. The patient’s teeth may become slightly sensitive in the early stages of treatment. This is quite normal, however, if pain becomes excessive, decrease application time with the aim to build it back up once the appliance is accustomed to and sensitivity subsides. The Myosa® appliance may change the position of the teeth and jaws, though the flexibility of the appliance minimises this potential.
